BBEdit is primarily a text editor. A text editor is the kind of program you use to write HTML code. Even though we said we were going to focus on WYSIWYG programs, we have included it in this section because it has some excellent features that can help you set up your page if you decide to code it yourself. In Web design circles, BBEdit is known as the text editor of choice for writing straight HTML code.

Like a word processor, BBEdit has an undo feature, which is invaluable for quickly undoing lines of code completely. (If you miss a tag or part of one when manually deleting it can mess up the rest of your code.) BBEdit also has menus, tool palettes, and dialog boxes that help you code most common tags. It will even allow you to assign keyboard shortcuts to your most commonly used tags so with two keystrokes you can insert them into your HTML document.

BBEdit also includes some basic site-management tools. It has an FTP client installed to help you get your site up and running. It also includes spelling, syntax, and link checkers to make sure your site is error free.

The most powerful feature in BBEdit is an easy-to-use search that allows you to search files without opening them first. This allows easy correction of things like file names or even URL locations of pictures should your Web administrator need to move things around.

There are some drawbacks to using BBEdit. Besides the fact it is not available for PC users, it does not operate on a WYSIWYG platform, so you need to know your HTML when you sit down to use it. Some beginners have complained that it is difficult to understand the interface, and the menu and tool bar structure can be confusing. Once you become accustomed to it, though, it becomes very useful.
