Apple Works 5.0

The newest version of a program originally called ClarisWorks, AppleWorks 5.0 is a one-stop program suite. Like Microsoft Office for the PC, AppleWorks contains an excellent word processor, a drawing program, a database program, a paint program, and even a spreadsheet program similar to MS Excel. Apple Works comes pre-installed on iMacs and allows users to create and maintain Web pages with relative ease. While there is a Windows version of the software, Apple is no longer marketing it and it may be difficult to find.

All the programs in the AppleWorks suite work together, which augments every aspect of Web site generation. One of the best features in Works is the ability to design complex pages and graphics. Using the word processor, you can utilize an array of superior word processing features. Spreadsheets designed in the document can perform calculations, which is an excellent feature if you want to include payment generators or offer your customers a way to figure out tax and shipping. Surprisingly, users found that the on-screen help is actually helpful.

Unfortunately, the AppleWorks program does not display true WYSIWYG. The page as designed in AppleWorks only bears a faint resemblance to what actually appears on your browser, so you’ll have to do some fiddling to get it to look the way you want. The program also does not develop true HTML code so you cannot simply go into the source code and make your fixes.

Other drawbacks include the fact that you cannot label images, align them, or eliminate borders, and probably the single biggest detractor to using this program for Web site generation is that when images are placed they become part of the document rather than being contained in a separate folder. This can make the file size of your page very large.
