The newest version of NetObjects’s Fusion package is a great resource for creating business-quality sites in a minimum of time. The program has a wide variety of built-in templates and themes that include a full array of buttons, text, GIFs, banners, bullets, and horizontal rules.

The code for the pages is not generated until you finish designing your site, so you cannot edit it as you go. That can be considered a drawback to advanced users and programmers, but for beginners who do not intend to change the code anyway it does not really matter. While you can add your own code to the page, you cannot change the code generated by the program. For programmers who know HTML, that presents a large problem. Unfortunately, Fusion writes code that is far from perfect. Even pre-existing code you import into the program is subjected to its at-will rewrites with some strange results.

Editing and fine tuning in the WYSIWYG views is relatively simple, allowing you to adjust everything from images to the page title without having to click through a half-dozen windows like some of the other programs we’ve mentioned. Some of the more labor intensive tasks (namely creation of navigation bars) are very simple with Fusion.

Fusion has full support for CSS and database connectivity, works with a wide variety of different plug-ins, and functions fairly well, though it can slow down at random times and has been known to crash unexpectedly. As with any program, it is wise to save your work often just in case.

These are just a few examples of the many Web site generation programs that are commercially available. If you decide to go this route and use a generation program, we advise that you read some additional reviews and do some comparison shopping. Prices are subject to change as newer programs come out, and versions are being upgraded almost monthly. Get a program that works well with your level of expertise. It is hardly wise to get a developing tool that requires some knowledge of HTML to produce good work if you have no interest in learning it. The most expensive is not always the best for you, so make sure you take some time to discover what program works best with your abilities, your desired outcome, and your budget. A little work now will save you a lot of money and frustration later.
